BENEFITS

HOUSING/COUNCIL TAX BENEFIT
There have been several changes to housing benefit & council tax benefit from April 2004.
  • Abolition of benefit periods & renewal claims.
    This means claimants benefits will carry on indefinitely & they will not need to make a renewal claim.
  • Abolition of the council tax benefit band restriction & new extended payment scheme for those coming of certain benefits.
  • The earning disregard increase for people working 30 hours a week or more has been extended to certain people working 16 hours a week or more.

INCOME SUPPORT


From 5th April, all lone parents who are entitled to income support are required to attend a work-focused interview regardless of the age of the child. Previously, some lone parents did not have to participate in an interview until their child was aged 5 years and 3 months or more.

EMPLOYMENT

The Employment Appeal Tribunal has decided that employment tribunals do not have the jurisdiction to decide whether a worker is entitled to statutory sick pay, maternity pay, paternity pay & adoption pay. The Inland Revenue Commissioners must make this decision.

BLUE BADGE
In Scotland, it is an offence not to produce a blue badge when asked to do so by a police officer, traffic warden or parking attendant.
